What is Botox®

Botox® is a portmanteau of the words “botulism” and “toxin.” The substance is made by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria as part of its metabolism.

But while the origins of Botox® might seem a little strange, it produces almost miraculous cosmetic results. In 1989, the FDA cleared Botox® for cosmetic uses. Patients who get injections enjoy fewer visible wrinkles around their eyes, brows, mouth, and forehead to appear visibly younger.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® works by inhibiting the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine preventing nerve cells from activating muscle fibers.

Dr. Greenberg at Winter Park Plastic Surgery injects tiny quantities of the compound under the skin into muscle tissue. After the procedure, the nervous system slowly loses the ability to send signals to the muscles. As the muscles relax, the tissues on top of them, including the skin, smoothes out, delivering the cosmetic benefits.

Botox® doesn’t last forever, though. Over time, the body processes and removes the substance. Therefore, most patients schedule top-ups at Winter Park Plastic Surgery every three to four months or so.

Benefits of Botox®

So, what benefits can you expect from Botox® treatment? Let’s take a look.

  • Reduced appearance of lines and wrinkles: While Botox® has some medical benefits (including reducing excessive sweating), its original and abiding purpose is to reduce lines and wrinkles. And that’s precisely what it does. A few days after receiving injections, you should notice deep furrows on your face beginning to fade.
  • Targeted action: You can get Botox® for multiple areas highly prone to deep wrinkles, including the brows, forehead, crow’s feet area, and smile lines.
  • More youthful appearance: If you want to look younger, Botox® could be just the treatment you need. It undoes years of tension in your face, helping the muscles to relax, allowing your true beauty to shine through.
  • Natural-looking results: Botox® doesn’t change the shape of your face or add volume. Instead, it simply works with the material already there, producing subtle, natural-looking results.
  • Quick treatment: Botox® injections at Winter Park Plastic Surgery only take 15 to 30 minutes to complete. After that, you’re free to return to your regular schedule.
