Chin Augmentation

A person’s jawline can have a huge influence on their appearance. For example, the size and structure of the chin can appear out-of-balance with their facial features, leading to the individual feeling unhappy about their looks. For these individuals, chin augmentation can provide the confidence they’re looking for.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Facial balance is extremely important in the consideration of any type of aesthetic facial plastic surgery. Aesthetic chin augmentation, or genioplasty, is a facial plastic surgery procedure in which the chin is reshaped or increased in size in relation to the nose, balancing the profile.

A genioplasty may be performed alone or in conjunction with other aesthetic facial plastic surgery procedures such as rhinoplasty or facelift. Chin augmentation surgery can significantly enhance the result of these other procedures, improve one’s appearance and overall facial balance.

Candidates for Chin Augmentation

At the initial consultation, your goals and expectations for chin augmentation surgery will be discussed in detail and an individual decision about the most appropriate technique(s) to be used will be discussed. Other facial rejuvenation procedures may also be discussed or recommended in order to achieve facial balance. All candidates should be healthy nonsmokers with realistic expectations for this procedure.

How Does It Work?

The chin augmentation procedure is usually performed in our accredited in-office surgery facility on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia may be recommended depending upon the individual circumstances.

The facial plastic surgery procedure may be done through an external incision on the underside of the chin or an incision inside the mouth. A genioplasty is performed by placing a chin implant (prosthesis) on the bone. Each particular situation and specific goals will determine the choice of the approach to use.

Results*

You’ll notice an immediate difference in your jawline appearance, but final results won’t be visible until swelling and bruising have gone away (about 4-6 weeks).

Recovery*

You will remain in the recovery area for approximately one to two hours after chin augmentation surgery. An overnight stay may be recommended if additional procedures are performed. Dr. Greenberg will review the postoperative care and common postoperative findings such as bruising and swelling, etc. with your family prior to your discharge.

Full healing with the resolution of all swelling and numbness may take several weeks. But, you should see a significant improvement after the initial dressing is removed.
