What is Botox® (Botulinum Toxin)?
Botox® is a neuromodulator or neurotoxin used to relax facial muscles. This treatment uses botulinum toxin to stop targeted facial muscles from contracting and creating wrinkles. How Does Botox® Work?
Expression lines and wrinkles are caused by muscle activity that pulls and creases the skin. Botox® targets the muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving others unaffected. As the treated muscles relax, your skin becomes smoother, and your lines and wrinkles disappear. Botox® is administered as a series of injections into areas like crow’s feet, forehead creases, and glabellar (between the brows) lines. The injections can take as little as fifteen minutes and use tiny needles that cause minimal discomfort.
Is There Any Recovery Time After Botox®?
One of the biggest advantages of Botox® is the ability to return to your usual activities immediately after your injections. There is no downtime required, and many people have Botox® treatment on a lunch break and return to work without delay.
You may notice minor swelling or spots of bruising in the injection area. These effects will fade within a day or two. Avoid rubbing your face or leaning over for several hours after treatment. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Otherwise, Botox® should not interrupt your daily routine.
What Results Will I See With Botox®?
Botox® results take a few days to develop as the botulinum toxin reaches the nerves and takes effect. You may see results within about three days, but full results can take up to ten days to develop. Botox® results usually last three to four months, although they may last a bit longer if you have Botox® regularly. If you stop using Botox®, your nerves will return to their normal function without any lasting effects.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?
Botox® has been widely used for aesthetic and medical purposes for decades with an excellent safety record. Most healthy adults are good candidates for this treatment. There is no “best” age to start Botox®, and younger individuals have started getting preventative Botox® treatments to keep expression lines from forming.
