Are you frustrated with those areas of fat that you cannot seem to get rid of? Each body stores fat in different places, and this stored fat resists all efforts to remove it. Liposuction removes excess fat for a more sculpted appearance. Dr. Greenberg can use liposuction almost anywhere you want to treat your most hard-to-remove fat.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure that uses a cannula to break up and remove fat cells. Dr. Greenberg performs traditional liposuction as well as VASER liposuction. VASER uses ultrasound guidance to precisely and gently remove fat cells. It works so gently that the fat cells remain unharmed and can be used for fat transfer procedures. Although liposuction does remove fat, you should consider it a body sculpting tool rather than a weight loss method.

How Does Liposuction Work for Fat Removal?

You can have liposuction with local or general anesthesia, although Dr. Greenberg usually recommends general anesthesia for most people. He will make a few small incisions and use these to insert a thin tube called a cannula. Moving the cannula breaks apart layers of fat cells, and the cannula uses suction to remove them. The small incisions will leave unnoticeably tiny scars, making liposuction a popular way to eliminate excess fat.

What Not to Do After Liposuction

Although you will not have large incisions to care for after liposuction, you will still need to follow a few precautions to ensure a smooth recovery. Here are a few tips to avoid problems:

  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Do not smoke or use nicotine products
  • Do not engage in strenuous exercise
  • Do not take medications or supplements that increase bleeding
  • Do not expose your healing incisions to the sun
  • Do not skip follow-up appointments
  • Do not lift heavy objects or strain yourself

After liposuction, the most important things to do are rest and take care of your body so it can heal. You should enlist your support network to help for the first day or two, especially if you have children to care for.

How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?

Your body does not grow new fat cells, so the ones removed with liposuction do not return. However, your remaining fat cells can expand if they store more fat. Your liposuction results can last a lifetime if you maintain a stable weight. Your sculpted liposuction results can be a great motivator to maintain your healthy lifestyle.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Anyone considering liposuction should know that despite its fat-removing abilities, it is not a weight-loss treatment. Good candidates for liposuction have areas of stubborn fat and want a more sculpted figure. You should be in good health and have reasonable expectations about your results. Only an assessment by Dr. Greenberg can determine whether liposuction is right for you.
