Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from areas in which it is not wanted. It can be used to treat many different parts of the body including thighs, stomach, back, chin area, and arms. The benefits include improved appearance and increased self-confidence.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction uses a cannula inserted under the skin to suction out excess fat. This works best when a person has areas of fat they have had difficulty getting rid of or for people who would like to see particular areas look more sculpted.
For many people, liposuction acts as a powerful boost to their self-esteem and allows them to feel more confident. However, people should consult with their doctor to make sure they have reasonable expectations about what liposuction can and cannot do.
How Does Liposuction Work?
Liposuction removes fat by sucking it out through a small incision. Your doctor will inject local anesthesia to numb the area, and then make an incision with a scalpel or piercing tool which is inserted through the surface of the skin and into deeper layers where it can suck out fatty tissue.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction works in a similar way, but ultrasound energy applied to the surface of the skin helps to break up fat prior to suctioning. This allows the fat cells to be removed more easily. It also helps keep these cells intact for implantation elsewhere in the body.
Liposuction may be combined with other procedures to enhance results or to harvest fat for replacement in other parts of the body. For example, harvested fat may be injected into the buttocks to increase volume and lift. During other procedures, liposuction may be used to shape and contour the final results.
What Are The Benefits of Liposuction?
Liposuction can remove fat that people have struggled with and cannot get rid of. It is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced physician. A major benefit of liposuction is the ability to contour your body by removing fat deposits in specific areas such as hips or thighs. The results are immediate and can last for years.
Liposuction can remove fat in areas where diet and exercise often cannot. It can also produce sculpting and contouring in areas of the body where we often find excess fat, such as the thighs, abdomen, and under the chin.
Liposuction will leave some swelling and bruising for several days. As this fades, your results will be fully visible. You will see decreased fat, smoother contours, and an improved shape in the treated areas. If you receive ultrasound-assisted liposuction your recovery time may be shorter.
Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
Good candidates for liposuction have reasonable expectations for how they will look after the procedure. People should be generally healthy and discuss any history of clotting, bleeding, or scarring problems with the doctor.
