What Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Treat?

Laser skin resurfacing with Dr. Greenberg at Winter Park Plastic Surgery addresses multiple skin complaints. It can:

  • Reverse or repair sun damage
  • Smooth skin and eliminate textural imperfections
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Even out hyperpigmentation, sun spots, age spots and other discolorations
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scars
  • Refresh skin and leave it glowing

In a sense, therefore, laser skin resurfacing is a catch-all treatment that allows you to address many skin issues with a single treatment.

About the Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing works by shining short, intense bursts of light at the skin to remove the uppermost layer of skin cells (as these tend to be the most damaged by the sun, aging and pollutants). Getting rid of these cells enables new cells to come up to the surface. As this happens, skin begins to behave more youthfully, reducing signs of wrinkles and blemishes in the process.

Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Greenberg may recommend either ablative or non-ablative lasers, or a combination of both. Ablative lasers target the uppermost layers of the dermis, while non-ablative heat layers lower down in the skin. Non-ablative lasers may be helpful for a range of conditions, including acne, spider veins and rosacea.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery and Downtime

Laser skin resurfacing involves resurfacing the top layer of skin, therefore you may experience some social downtime and tenderness after treatment. However, there is nothing physically keeping you from continuing your activities as normal.

How long your recovery takes in total depends on the depth of your treatment. Most patients are able to resume their regular activities after a couple of days to a week, with all swelling and redness from the treatment resolving in two to three weeks. However, if your laser resurfacing is deeper, then it could take several weeks for the skin to heal. Furthermore, some patients may experience erythema which is a type of redness that may leave a residue pink hue that may take several months to resolve.

During recovery, you’ll need to clean the treated area two to five times per day with a special solution provided by Dr. Greenberg. You’ll also need to diligently apply sunscreen to protect against sunburn as your skin may be more prone to sun damage for up to a year.
