Many of us know the tricks to hide a double chin during pictures – a strategically placed hand or changing the camera angle. People often feel self-conscious about their appearance because of a double chin. Fortunately, Kybella® can get rid of accumulated chin fat for a more defined neckline.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is the only FDA-approved injectable to get rid of submental (below the chin) fat. Using a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid (a natural substance your body uses to break down fat in your digestive system), Kybella® breaks down fat cells for your lymphatic system to remove over time. The inflammatory effect causes your skin to contract and close the space where the dissolved fat existed, eliminating your double chin.
Dr. Scott Greenberg, our surgeon at Winter Park Plastic Surgery, injects Kybella® into the target site. The usual number of injections is 20 to 30, but you may receive up to 50 small injections spaced 1 cm apart. Multiple treatment sessions are recommended for optimal results. Most patients see results after two to four sessions, but you may have up to six sessions spaced at least a month apart.
How Many Vials of Kybella® are Used?
Kybella® usually uses dosages of 0.2 mL for each injection. The maximum dosage amount is 50 injections, totaling 10 mL of Kybella® per session. Each injection is spaced 1 cm apart. You may decide to complete up to six sessions of injections spaced no less than one month apart.
In clinical studies, the initial treatment averaged around 6.4 mL. For those who opted for six treatment sessions, the final session averaged approximately 4.4 mL. No more than 10 mL of Kybella® may be administered per session.
These injections must be administered by a healthcare professional such as Dr. Greenberg or one of the experts at Winter Park Plastic Surgery to ensure your safety and to correctly calculate the dosage for your treatment. When injected by an experienced hand, Kybella® can effectively reduce your double chin once and for all.
What Results Will I See With Kybella®?
You may experience swelling for the first few weeks following your initial session, and this is an entirely normal part of the process. Swelling can last up to one month. Kybella® doesn’t require any downtime and you can return to your regular activities as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.
After two to four sessions, you should begin seeing the results of Kybella® breaking down the fat cells. You should see a slimmer neck and a more shapely jaw as your double chin recedes and the skin tightens. Once your series of injections are complete, you shouldn’t need any more treatments. Kybella® results last a lifetime as long as you maintain a stable weight.
