A double chin, also known as submental fullness, can make you self-conscious. If you are one of many people bothered by the appearance of a double chin, you have a non-surgical option for eliminating it. Kybella® is a highly effective way to remove stubborn fat under your chin and around your neck.

What is Kybella®?

Minimally invasive Kybella® is an injectable treatment that targets fat cells in your neck and chin area. It breaks up fat cells, improving the shape and definition of your neck, chin, and jawline. Kybella® uses a compound called deoxycholic acid. The molecule is a synthetic version of one found in your digestive system, where it helps break down and metabolize dietary fat.

Kybella® is administered as a series of injections until you achieve your desired results. Your lymphatic system gradually removes the damaged fat cells, leaving your neck slimmer and your chin more defined. While Kybella® is FDA-approved for submental fat, it also has off-label uses such as jowls, banana rolls, and even knees.

How Long Does Kybella® Last?

Kybella® works by permanently destroying fat cells. As an adult, you do not make new fat cells, so these cells will not grow back. As a result, Kybella® can last as long as you maintain a reasonably stable weight. You will still have fat cells in the treated area, which can expand to hold more fat if you gain weight. The best way to keep your Kybella® results for many years is to avoid large weight increases.

How Many Kybella® Injections Do I Need?

Your injection specialist at Winter Park Plastic Surgery and Laser Center will administer Kybella® injections once a month. Each session takes 15 to 20 minutes. The number of treatments needed depends on how much submental fat you want to treat and how your body responds. Most people need two to four treatments, although you may need up to six. Your injection specialist will determine how many treatment sessions you may need.

How Long is Recovery from Kybella®

You can resume normal activities after getting your Kybella® injections. After Kybella® injections, some people experience swelling, numbness, and bruising in the treated area. These will resolve within one to two weeks. Some people might notice areas of hardness, but these will go away without treatment in a few days. Your injection specialist will explain exactly what to expect after treatment and what to do if you have any questions.

How Long Does it Take to See Kybella® Results?

Your lymphatic system starts filtering the treated fat cells out of the body almost immediately. However, the process takes a few weeks. Many people see results from their second treatment. Full results are usually visible within 30 to 90 days. Your Aesthetic Center specialist will determine whether you need further treatment to achieve your desired results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella®?

Good candidates for Kybella® want to address a double chin without surgical procedures. Kybella® is safe for most healthy adults. You will not be able to receive Kybella® injections if you have an infection or active skin condition in the treatment area. Kybella® has not been shown to be safe for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
