Botox® Overview
Over the years, the facial expressions you make, like frowning and furrowed brows, cause the skin in these areas to develop fine lines and wrinkles. Botox®, an injectable treatment, helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles caused by frequent facial expressions.
Botox® is made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, also known as botulinum toxin, which is safe when administered in small doses and is FDA-approved for cosmetic uses. A Botox® treatment takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
What Is Botox®?
Botulinum toxin, the main ingredient in Botox®, can provide patients with many positive results. The ingredients in Botox® act as a neuromodulator when injected into often-worked muscles along the face. Frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and even neckbands result from repeated nerve signaling that tells the underlying muscles to contract.
Botox® works by blocking these nerve signals, allowing the skin’s surface to relax. Before long, fine lines and wrinkles go away, leaving behind a smooth skin surface.

You’re a good candidate for Botox® if:

What Is the Procedure Like?
Botox® injections are performed in-office, take less than 30 minutes to complete, and require no anesthesia. Some patients report feeling a pinch when receiving Botox® injections but nothing more than that.
Different areas of the face require varying doses of botulinum toxin. Typically, dosage amounts go as follows:
- Frown line areas – five injections between the brows and forehead
- Crow’s feet areas – three injection along the sides of each eye
- Forehead area – five injections into the muscle that runs along the forehead
- Neck area – will vary depending on the size of the area
Is There Any Downtime?
Botox® treatments require little to no downtime, so you can return to your regular daily routine immediately after the procedure. Skin may feel a little tender and swollen at the injection sites.
What Results Can I Expect?
You can expect to see lines and wrinkles around treated areas start to smooth out within 24 hours. Full results will become apparent within 30 days. And Botox® results will last anywhere from three to four months though some patients see lasting results for up to six months. It all depends on how fast your body metabolizes the substance.
