Why Does Acne Occur?

Acne happens when pores in the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells and later become infected. Most acne takes the form of pimples or whiteheads, where the pus comes to the surface. However, some people can develop cystic acne where the inflammation remains under the skin for long periods.

Acne is also related to hormonal changes – a major reason why teenagers get it much more often than young children. Changes in chemical signaling in the body create the conditions that make inflamed and infected pores more likely.

Blue Light Therapy for Acne

Blue light therapy is a powerful tool you can use to combat the causes of acne. Dr. Greenberg and his team apply it to areas affected by breakouts, helping to soothe and reduce their appearance over time.

Blue light is naturally antimicrobial, meaning that blue light therapy can kill the bacteria in pores that invoke the body’s inflammatory response. It also changes the behavior of skin cells to make them less prone to inflammation. So even if you do get an infection, they’re less likely to flare up.

The great thing about blue light therapy at Winter Park Plastic Surgery is that it’s an outpatient treatment. That means you’re free to go home immediately.

During your session, we’ll first apply a cool gel your face to improve the effectiveness of the treatment. After placing eye protection, we’ll start applying the blue light. Sessions usually take around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area you’d like to treat.

Following treatment, you may notice that your skin is mildly peeled or crusted over. This effect is normal and usually heals within one to two weeks. You may also experience skin sensitivity to light in the following weeks, so avoid direct sunlight and apply sunscreen.

Blue light therapy is most effective for skin conditions when used repeatedly. For acne, you’ll need between four and six sessions to see maximum benefits, with repeat sessions every six months or so.

Am I a Candidate for Blue Light Therapy?

If you get regular breakouts, then you could be an ideal candidate for blue light therapy at Winter Park Plastic Surgery. The procedure is non-invasive and safe, making it suitable for the vast majority of patients.
