Your skin can accumulate many types of damage over time, including sun exposure, air pollution, and irritants. At the same time, age-related changes leave it with less collagen and increased laxity. Microneedling addresses all these concerns and many others, renewing your smoother, brighter skin with minimal discomfort or downtime.

What is Microneedling for Skin Rejuvenation?

Microneedling has been referred to as “collagen induction therapy” for its powerful ability to generate new collagen in your skin. It works by creating tiny areas of controlled damage that reach into the dermis, triggering collagen formation and speeding up cellular turnover. At Winter Park Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, we offer Genius™ RF microneedling. This advanced system uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to improve your results.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

People who dislike needles often have concerns about whether microneedling will be painful. Fortunately, the needles used by the Genius™ RF system are tiny and only penetrate a few millimeters into the skin, far less deep than most people expect. As a result, you will feel little to no discomfort.

Some people report that microneedling feels tingly or prickly, while people who have RF microneedling may also experience a sensation of warmth. While these sensations can be mildly unpleasant, most people find them entirely tolerable and are comfortable throughout their session.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Because it offers skin rejuvenation from the dermis outward, microneedling can treat a wide range of skin concerns. The new collagen improves the skin’s texture and firmness, while healthy new skin cells fade pigmentation issues and brighten the skin. Some of the most common uses for microneedling include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Skin laxity
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Dullness

How Many Microneedling Sessions Will I Need?

We find that most people will benefit from more than one microneedling treatment to maximize their results. Three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is the most common treatment schedule. However, more severe textural issues may require additional sessions.

Microneedling results take about three months to develop as your skin adds new collagen. Once established, results can last a year or more. Many people have an annual maintenance session to keep their skin smooth and healthy-looking.

Is There Any Downtime After Microneedling?

When you leave your microneedling session, your skin may feel warm and sensitive, and it will look red. This redness and minor swelling can last a day or two, and most people need no more than 48 hours to return to their usual activities. However, you will need to wear sunscreen consistently.

Microneedling primes your skin to take advantage of medical-grade skincare products, so allow our team to recommend products that will boost your skin while it heals and help your results last longer. Use caution with your usual skincare products while your skin is still sensitive.

Shana is incredibly knowledgeable about skincare. I’ve struggled with acne for years, but she helped me get it under control and significantly improved the overall texture of my skin. I couldn’t be happier with the results!
