Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes enlarged breasts in men. While the condition is common, it can cause embarrassment and lower your self-esteem. Removing your shirt may be difficult, whether in public or private affairs.

Gynecomastia, however, is not an untreatable condition. Dr. Greenberg performs gynecomastia surgeries at Winter Park Plastic Surgery to help men restore their masculine physique.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery removes the glandular tissue causing enlarged breasts in men. Dr. Greenberg performs the surgery three ways at Winter Park Plastic Surgery.

Liposuction primarily addresses the fatty tissue by loosening and removing it with a thin tube called a cannula. If your skin has strong elasticity, it will only require liposuction. Excision removes glandular tissue or excess skin and can reduce or reposition the areola. Some patients may require a combination of both.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Often, hormonal imbalances in males cause gynecomastia. Heightened estrogen level due to puberty or hormonal changes causes an increase in glandular tissue. Significant weight gain can also cause gynecomastia.

If your gynecomastia is caused by puberty or weight gain, your condition will likely resolve with time or a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Candidates for gynecomastia surgery are those whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments and are nonsmokers in good overall physical health. If you are bothered by your breasts being too large, gynecomastia may be a good option.

Adolescents may receive reduction surgery but may need to repeat the surgery if breast development continues.

How Long Is Recovery From Gynecomastia Surgery?

Most gynecomastia surgery patients require at least one week off to recover. If your job requires manual labor, you may require longer. You will need to wear a compression garment during recovery to reduce swelling.

What Results Can I Expect with Gynecomastia Surgery?

After your male breast reduction surgery, you may notice an immediate improvement in the size and shape of your chest, but final results appear after the swelling and bruising subside. Most patients see final results in 3-6 months after their surgery.

Your results will last forever. If certain drugs, medications, or weight gain caused your gynecomastia, you would need to avoid the cause to maintain your results.

How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost?

The 2019 American Society of Plastic Surgeons statistics states that the average cost was $4,123 in addition to costs for anesthesia, facility fees, medication fees, and any garments worn to reduce swelling post-surgery.
