Sculptra is a unique, long lasting injectable treatment. Sculptra is made of a bio compatible substance called poly-L-lactic acid and has been used in the body or many years as a suture material.  Rather than simply filling in your wrinkles, it stimulates your body to produce its own filler.  It is best thought of as a volume enhancer rather than filler. Allergy testing is not required prior to Sculptra treatments. It is FDA-approved for this purpose.

Sculptra is typically used to treat large depressed areas of the face, and is increasingly being used instead of fat injections or fat grafts. Sculptra is often used for:

  • Skin folds
  • Sunken eyes
  • Cheek augmentation
  • Temple hollow augmentation

It is ideal for people who have experienced fat loss in the face as an unanticipated side effect of working out or dieting. The results can last for at least 18-24 months. Improvement is gradual after the procedure and you will require more than one session (probably 3) to achieve the desired results.  It usually takes 2-3 months to achieve the final result.

The procedure

As with other injectable treatments, Sculptra injections take about 15 minutes to half an hour, although it is important to remember that it will require several treatments to get the desired results.

  • Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area
  • Small amounts of Sculptra are injected under the skin
  • Full results are seen in 2-3 months after multiple treatments

Recovery and results

After your procedure we advise that you use an ice pack to reduce swelling. At first you may see a dramatic improvement which seems to diminish over the first few days. This is actually the fluid of the injection giving you an idea of what the final result will be.  As Sculptra stimulates your body to produce new collagen, this process is gradual and takes several months to be completed.

You can resume most of your normal activities immediately after Sculptra injections, but strenuous activity is not recommended for 24 hours.

Over the next few weeks your body will produce new collagen, which will fill the desired area. You may choose to maintain your look with touch ups or additional treatment, but your results should last for at least 18-24 months, much longer than more short-term treatments like Restylane or Juvéderm.
