Restylane, like Juvéderm, is an hyaluronic acid-based injectable gel that smoothes your facial wrinkles and creases by adding volume. It is recommended for treating nasolabial folds and other wrinkles around the mouth and frown lines in the forehead. It is also used to augment the size of the upper and lower lips.
The basic material of the Restylane family of products, hyaluronic acid, works naturally in your body as a skin filler. It also lubricates your joints and tissues. Unfortunately, naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, leaving the skin susceptible to wrinkles.
As a natural compound, Restylane is gradually absorbed by the body, but as it is absorbed, the remaining material binds water molecules, allowing Restylane to maintain its volume for about 6 months. Temporary fillers have the advantage of allowing periodic touch-ups, revisions, and re-treatments at any time.
A newly released product, Restylane Silk, is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and lines around the lips. Other off-label uses for this new product are also possible.
Restylane is not animal-based, so you will not need an allergy test prior to your treatment.
As with other injectable fillers, Restylane injections take about 15 minutes.
- Numbing cream is applied to the area
- Restylane is injected under the skin where filling is necessary
- Dr. Greenberg may gently massage the treated area
- Full results take about 1-2 weeks
Lip Augmentation with Restylane
During the recovery time, you may experience some minor swelling, pain, and redness. This should subside within a day or two after your treatment. For at least 24 hours after treatment, you should try to avoid strenuous activity, sun exposure and excessive heat.
