Liposuction / Body Contouring

Orlando and Winter Park, Florida

Suction-assisted lipectomy or liposuction is a safe, accepted plastic surgical technique used to remove localized collections of excess fat. It is most often used in areas that have been resistant to diet, exercise and weight loss. It is best thought of as a method of " body contouring" or "body sculpting" and is not a substitute for weight loss in cases of generalized obesity. Liposuction can be performed in most areas of the body safely and effectively. The best candidates for liposuction are those patients who are in good general health, have young elastic skin, are of relatively normal weight and whose localized fat collections have been resistant to diet, weight loss and exercise.

Liposuction Consultation

At the initial liposuction consultation, your goals and expectations about liposuction surgery will be discussed in detail. Liposuction techniques will be discussed and an individual decision as to the most appropriate technique(s) to be used will be selected. It is important that the best procedure or combination of procedures be selected as some patients are not suitable candidates for liposuction. Alternative body contouring methods such as abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) may be supplemented by simultaneous liposuction. The locations of the necessary incisions for the liposuction will also be discussed.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is performed at our accredited in-office surgical facility on an outpatient basis. Though other types anesthesia are available, Dr. Greenberg feels general anesthesia gives you the greatest degree of safety and comfort and allows for the most effective treatment of all areas. Pre-injection with a wetting solution is then done. The incisions are made in inconspicuous locations through which a blunt, hollow rod called a cannula is inserted. The cannula is connected to a suction device and the excess fat is removed.

After Your Liposuction Surgery

Compression garments are worn for several weeks after liposuction surgery. The areas treated with suction assisted lipectomy will be swollen and bruised in the early postoperative period. Most of this will resolve within the first 3 weeks but it may be several weeks longer before the swelling completely resolves and normal sensation returns to the area. You should expect to be able to return to work after one week and resume all normal activities, including exercise, after 3 weeks.
