Laser Surgery

Orlando and Winter Park, Florida

Lasers have been used for many years in many types of surgery but have recently become increasingly popular in cosmetic surgery because of ease of use, newer technology and more precise, predictable results. These lasers offer a new alternative or may be used as an adjunctive treatment to enhance the effectiveness of other skin rejuvenating procedures, including surgery.

There are a variety of different conditions that are amenable to laser surgery treatment including removal of vascular and benign pigmented lesions, age spots and unwanted hair, improvement of rosacea, skin texture problems, minor acne scarring and fine lines. The variety of conditions able to be treated rapidly changes as the technology continues to evolve. The type of laser and specific skin rejuvenation treatment offered needs to be individually tailored to the patient’s condition and desires. Dr. Greenberg offers a selection of state-of-the-art laser skin rejuvenation treatments featuring the Sciton Profile, LightSheer™, and QuantumIPL lasers. These procedures include Pro-Fractional™, MicroLaserPeel®. SkinTyte™, BBL™, intense-pulsed light (PhotoLite) and laser resurfacing.

MicroLaser Peel® (“Weekend Peel”)

If you are looking for more than microdermabrasion or a light chemical peel and you have little time for prolonged healing, then the MicroLaser Peel is designed for you. Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the stratum corneum (10 microns).  The Micro-Laser Peel is a partial-to-full epidermal peel (20 to 50 microns) and is typically performed with topical anesthesia. Because this procedure peels deeper into the skin, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and full skin resurfacing. Healing takes 3-4 days.  Symptoms immediately following the procedure resemble a sunburn, with minor sloughing on the second day. Redness will begin to fade by the third day, and be easily covered by makeup on the fourth day. Most patients have a series of treatments repeated 2-4 times, spaced 6-8 weeks apart.

ProFractional Laser Peel is a quick and relatively comfortable laser procedure with little to no downtime used to improve the overall appearance of your skin. The conditions most commonly treated include wrinkles and fine lines, post- traumatic scars, acne scars, age spots, sun spots and freckles.  Most body areas and skin types can be treated.  Popular areas are the face, neck, chest and hands.  Most commonly, topical anesthesia is used.  An advanced microbeam technology is used which creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin that are surrounded by areas of healthy, untreated skin.  The zones of untreated skin invigorate the body’s natural healing process, and the treated areas stimulate production of new collagen, plumping up the skin and smoothing out wrinkles, lines, scars and other irregularities.  Since only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, healing time is quick and downtime is short. After the treatment you may experience a mild redness, resembling a sunburn sensation.  Complete healing takes about 3 to 5 days and most patients can get back to work and apply makeup within 1-2 days after treatment.  It is important to stay out of the sun afterward as your skin will be more sensitive to ultra violet light.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

For those patients with more severe conditions such as deep wrinkles, severe acne scars, surgical scars, hypertrophic scars, epidermal nevi, actinic keratoses and severely sun damaged or photoaged skin, laser skin resurfacing may be an option.  It is usually performed under general anesthesia in the operating room. The depth of the peel varies depending on your condition and desired result.  Your healing time will depend upon your actual treatment depth.  You will experience erythema (redness) and swelling that may last several weeks and there may be a residual pink or red color that may take several months to resolve.  Healing time varies among individuals but you should be prepared for approximately one week of downtime away from your normal activities.  The amount of discomfort varies from patient to patient.  Dr. Greenberg and his staff will discuss your post laser treatment care options to properly manage any discomfort.

SkinTyte Photo rejuvenation

The SkinTyte procedure is similar to the PhotoLite IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment that we have offered for years.  It utilizes a broadband of light energy to heat the deeper layer of skin, the dermis. This stimulates new collagen formation leading to increased skin firmness. The procedure is recommended for patients who desire moderate, noticeable skin improvement who are not yet ready or do not desire surgery.  The SkinTyte light energy is delivered in a sequence of rapid, gentle pulses.  There is no need for topical anesthetic.  You may experience some mild redness in the treated area immediately after and this should return to normal within minutes. Since the SkinTyte procedure is non-invasive there is no downtime so you can resume regular activities immediately following treatment.  You can also apply makeup and sunscreen after each session.  The SkinTyte procedure is not a substitute for surgery and results vary from patient to patient. Full results often take up to four months as the collagen foundation of your skin is rebuilt and strengthened. A series of 4-6 treatments spaced two to four weeks apart is typical of most patients and is often combined with other laser treatments to provide optimal results.

Acne “Blue Light” Laser Treatments

Acne is a common inflammatory condition of the skin frequently associated with teenagers but it is not uncommon in adults.  It is characterized by large, clogged pores, pimples, cysts, blackheads and whiteheads and if not properly treated it can lead to significant, permanent scarring.  It is typically treated with a combination of topical and systemic (antibiotics) agents but some cases are resistant to this therapy.  Compliance with these treatments is also a common problem in teenagers.

Blue light laser treatments may be a great adjunct to traditional acne treatment for difficult cases  or considered as an alternative before using Accutane. Blue light laser energy is delivered and gently heats the skin targeting harmful bacteria. Typically a series of 4 to 6 treatments at  2 to 4 week intervals are done.  Blue Light is commonly combined with other laser modalities, aesthetician procedures and topical skin care products for optimal results.  Some patients with more severe, cystic acne may require a topical medication called Levulan before they have the laser treatment done.  This medication intensifies the heat of the blue light laser.  Some patients experience redness and mild swelling after the treatment that typically resolves after a few hours.  Laser treatments will be based on individual needs, severity of the acne and desired outcome.
