Fillers

Orlando and Winter Park, Florida

At the initial consultation, your goals and expectations about the procedure will be discussed in detail. An individual decision about the most appropriate technique(s) or material to be used will be selected and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be discussed.

Zyderm/Zyplast Collagen

This is medically processed bovine (cow) collagen that is the usual standard to which other filler materials are compared. The advantages are known safety, predictability and longevity of response because of longtime use and known allergic risk (1%); the disadvantages are potential allergy, the need for a pre-treatment skin test to determine allergy and longevity of only 2-4 months depending on the site of injection, immune response, etc. It is FDA approved for this purpose.

Fat Injection

This is your own fat that may be harvested for re-injection. The advantages are no chance of allergic reaction; the disadvantages of this material are the need for harvesting and no proven increased longevity over collagen. No FDA approval is required.

Cosmoderm/Cosmoplast

This is genetically engineered human collagen derived from tissue grown in a laboratory. The advantages are no need for a skin test and minimal allergic risk. It is an excellent adjunct to newer fillers because of minimal downtime and less painful injections. It is FDA approved for this purpose.

Hyaluronic Acid fillers

These products are the most popular of the current fillers and include Restylane, Juvéderm, Perlane. They are safe and natural non-animal based hyaluronic acid products (normal components of human skin) that are synthetically produced. They has been used outside the United States exclusively and were recently FDA approved for use in the United States for treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. Their use in the lips is considered off-label by the FDA, however, we have seen excellent results.

Hylaform

This is a hyaluronic acid product (similar to Restylane) from an animal (rooster comb) source. It was recently FDA approved for the injection of facial wrinkles and folds. The disadvantage over Restylane is increased allergic risk and possible decreased longevity.

Radiesse

Radiesse is synthetically produced particulate calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel delivery system. Radiesse usually lasts 9-12 months after injection and is FDA approved for use for treating facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds. We have had excellent results here and as a filler in the cheek. No skin test is required.

Sculptra

This is a synthetic injectable material known as poly-L-lactic acid which has been used for years in the body in other forms (suture material) and is very well tolerated by the body. This substance is injected below the skin and is used as a volume enhancer and actually thickens skin. Longevity is approximately 18-24 months. No skin test is required. Multiple treatment sessions are required to see the best results. It is considered an off-label FDA use for this purpose.

Artefill

This is a non-absorbable, "permanent" filler approved by the FDA for the treatment of nasolabial folds. It consists of a combination of bovine collagen and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. Skin testing is required with a month waiting period prior to treatment.
