Breast Implant Options

Orlando and Winter Park, Florida

One of the most important decisions you must make in getting breast augmentation surgery is the type of implant you will receive.  In order to make the best decision, you must consider the look you hope to achieve, and therefore the Breast Implant Placement, and the position of the implant in the chest (Breast Implant Placement) and the type of incision you prefer (Breast Augmentation Incision Option).

There are five main variables you have to decide about your breast implant:

  • Size
  • Fill type and level
  • Projection
  • Shape
  • Texture

Dr. Greenberg is very experienced with breast augmentation surgery and while he knows how to achieve a great result, he also understands that this is a very personal procedure involving individual desires and decisions.  He will take the time to listen to you explain your goals, discuss all of the available options with you and help you make the decision as to which option will give you the best result.

Size

In general, the larger the implant, the more dramatic the change in the size of your breasts.  The general proportions of your body will determine the maximum size implant that will give you a natural look, as well as the maximum implant size that can be placed without undue risk of significant complications.  Breast implants come in a large variety of sizes. The larger the breast implant with respect to your own breast tissue, the more it may dominate the shape of your breasts and stretch your areolae.

Fill

The two fill options available are silicone gel and saline. There are advantages and disadvantages of each of these breast implant types which Dr. Greenberg will discuss with you.  Most people agree that silicone gel implants look and feel more natural.  Saline implants are absolutely safe and may be an appropriate choice in a woman who has enough breast tissue to support them.  The point is that there is no one correct way to perform this procedure or which implant is better.  Dr. Greenberg will help you decide which of these techniques is best for you.

Profile

Breast implants come in a variety of ”profiles” reflecting the projection outward from the chest.  Higher profile implants project farther from your chest than low or moderate profile implants per volume.  The right implant for you will depend on your body proportions, width of your chest, the amount of your own breast tissue present and the quality of your skin.

Shape

Manufacturers offer both round and shaped implants.  Shaped implants are all generally tear-shaped, narrow at the top, with more projection at the bottom.  Studies have shown that in breast augmentation patients “natural” results can be achieved with both of these implant styles.

Texture

Breast implants come in both smooth and rough surface textures.  Texturing is designed to keep the implant from rotating in its pocket, and is necessary for shaped implants.  In general, textured implants are usually more easily seen and felt through the skin than smooth implants but have a decreased likelihood of becoming firm (capsular contracture) in certain positions.  Again, there is no one “right” choice and Dr. Greenberg will help you with this decision.
