Multiple pregnancies, loss of skin elasticity, loss of breast volume and gravity are several factors that cause the breasts to lose their shape and firmness and cause them to sag. Mastopexy is a procedure performed to elevate and reshape sagging breasts and reposition the nipple to a more desirable site. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. Women who are in good general physical health, are nonsmokers and who have realistic expectations and goals about the breast surgery are the best candidates for breast lift surgery. While mastopexy will elevate the breasts, factors that caused the breasts to lose their shape will continue to have their effects. Some loss of shape and sagging may eventually recur.
Breast Lift Surgery Consultation
At the initial breast lift consultation, your goals and expectations of the surgery will be discussed in detail. Depending upon your age and your family and personal history of breast disease, a mammogram may be recommended. Factors that determine the decision as to the best technique for you -- your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin -- will be explained. It is important that the most appropriate breast surgery procedure or combination of breast surgery procedures be selected. Some women are candidates for breast lift surgery alone. For others, a combination of mastopexy and placement of a breast implant will achieve the best cosmetic results. The locations of the proposed incisions will be discussed.
"Within a few minutes into my consultation I knew Dr. Greenberg was the one I wanted to do my surgery. He went over and discussed so much information that I barely had any questions! He was so thorough that I trusted him 100%. "
"I made a few phone calls and wrote a few emails. Your office was the most attentive and helpful. I was very impressed with the doctor and all of the staff from the very beginning so I felt no need to shop around."

Breast Lift Procedure
Mastopexy is usually performed at our accredited in-office surgical facility. An overnight stay may be recommended for comfort, safety and convalescence. General anesthesia is usually required unless very small incisions are planned. Breast lift surgery usually takes 2-3 hours depending upon the extent of work required. The incisions involve the area of excess skin to be removed after which the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher location on the chest. The remaining breast skin is then reshaped. Techniques vary according to the requirements of the individual patient. Shorter incision techniques may be appropriate and, if so, these will be discussed. If an implant is to be inserted, it can be done using any of these breast surgery techniques.
After Your Breast Lift Surgery
A surgical bra is used and a light dressing is worn for one week following breast lift surgery. Swelling and discoloration of your breasts generally subsides after a few days. Limited activity is recommended for the first week after surgery. Approximately one week after breast lift surgery, you should be able to drive and return to work. Resumption of regular exercise is possible 3 weeks following breast surgery. Instructions on wound care and bathing, as well as specific instructions on resuming activities will be provided prior to the breast lift surgery procedure.
